A
Little History:
Born and raised in the 60'-70's, Leo Shababy took on the name
Skip that his parents gave him as a young boy. Skip grew up
in the west suburbs and enjoyed a normal upbringing among 4
brothers and a sister. Mom and dad struggled trying to raise
6 kids, but Saturday nights were the big nights to go out to
our favorite Hot dog Stand (Gene&Judes) at River Road and
Grand Avenue. Just as we neared that tiny worn down building
through the alleyway the aroma from the back of the restaurant
filled our old Station Wagon and we would start shouting with
anticipation.
As we all know, you
grow up quickly and before long I was driving my own van to go to
all the different stands that were popping up all over. Truly, Hotdogs
and Italian beef sandwiches became my favorite fast food over any
other fast food chain restaurant.
"Besides food, my
other love was music. I followed my big brother, a musician, and
developed a talent as a drummer in several good bands in the Chicago
area."
Bringing
it to Atlanta:
One of Skips achievement was to play with a member of the group
"Survivor". But marriage, 3 sons, and a move to Atlanta
in 1979 brought a whole new opportunity to bring the Chicago
hot dog concept here.
Skips opened the first
location In Avondale Estates in 1979, in a 600 sqft building and
9 years later built a 2000 square foot building to accommodate more
customers.
Today:
After 7 other restaurants were opened and either sold or closed,
Skip finds himself back at unit #1 with much thanks to God for the
success he enjoys with his sons and main manager Jesus Velez. After
21 years in this business, I could conclude this story with one
statement.
"Be thankful for
good employees, and try to never grow old."
